On Wednesday October 24, 2007 Jefferson Parish residents packed into the Pontchartrain Center for the eighth annual Senior Citizen Expo, sponsored by Jefferson Parish Senior Citizen Services. The event, with a Halloween theme, was held from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, and included the following co-sponsors:West Jefferson Medical Center, East Jefferson Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center, Mothe Life Insurance Company, Pontchartrain Center, Chateau Notre Dame, Entergy, Peoples Health, Print All and Crystal Clear Imaging
The Expo provided seniors in Jefferson Parish with information on various services, programs, and functions offered by area businesses, non-profit organizations, hospitals, nursing facilities, clinics, universities, and government agencies in Jefferson Parish. An estimated 2,000 persons attended the event.
Jefferson Transit sponsored one booth and provided seniors with information on the current ADA accessible fixed route bus service and the MITS paratransit service, operated by Jefferson Parish. Jefferson Transit staff also handed out fare pouches and candy.
Jefferson Transit also asked senior citizens participating in the expo to take a survey concerning their knowledge of the Jefferson Transit System and discovered that 77% of the seniors use a personal vehicle, while only 10% use some form of public transportation. 58% of the seniors at the expo live near a bus route, and over 50% of the senior citizens who took the survey either know someone who takes the bus or take the bus themselves. Also, over 50% of the seniors who took the survey are aware that JeT buses accommodate persons with disabilities. Schedules, maps, and safety tips for riders were the most requested information in order to make taking the bus easier.
The Expo offered seniors a day of entertainment, and volunteers and seniors dressed in costumes for the occasion. Overall the expo was a great success.
